Kiki Tried: Hay, Gelato

Hello there, lovelies!

Bedok’s been teeming with life recently, huh? All these new cafes popping up all over the place. Both Rose and I live in Bedok, by the way, so yay to us, nay to our waistlines.

Anyways, while Rose was at Treehouse by Mosanco at Bedok North, sippin’ atas tea in the hopes of becoming as ladylike as Daphne Bridgerton, I was having a whale of a time at Nangfa, a Thai restaurant somewhere nearby her. And then my friend and I walked past hay, gelato., a newly opened gelato store in the heart of Bedok.

I love their name. So punny. But it probably stems from their signature ice cream flavour, Smoke Hay.

Anyways, my friend and I were standing outside of their store when a waitress immediately zipped out to ask if we wanted to dine in or takeaway, and then brought us in. We were stuffed from Nangfa, mind you, but decided that a little ice cream couldn’t hurt. RIP to my waistline, thank you very much.

The ice cream café is tiny. It really is. They only have like, three tables? Probably to fit into the COVID-19 guidelines. I almost felt claustrophobic in there.

So, seeing as they were newly opened, we were unsure of what to get. That’s when the friendly service staff asked if we wanted waffles and recommendations. Because of COVID-19, they can’t let us try the flavours. Understandable, but we were bummed, because look at the gorgeous array of flavours.

But hey! They accept cash, PayLah and PayNow, so… not so bad!

Anyways, because we were stuffed after dinner, we ordered ice cream without waffles. Please note that they have pretty… unique… flavours. Or artisanal if you prefer fancier words. Look, they even have Pineapple Tart as a flavour!

Anyways, we got a Brown Sugar Rosemary (S$4.20), which is considered a “normal” flavour, and a Black Sesame (S$5.20), which is considered a “premium” flavour and therefore cost more.

On first taste, you could taste the rosemary in the Brown Sugar Rosemary. After that first bite though, everything went downslope into saltiness. My kidneys were tingling. But hey, the gelato was smooth! The ice cream came with rice crackers on the top, which were fragrant.

The Black Sesame, on the other hand, tasted like… sesame… No, but it was really strong, sesame-wise, and I do love me some thick, thick sesame. They added sesame powder on the top, I think, so it was extra gao. Honestly, it tasted like icified sesame paste to me.

We saw the table next to us chowing down on ice cream and waffles, by the way. They look so good; we’re going back in the future to try it (+S$5 for waffles). The service staff were really friendly and bid us farewell and thanks when we left.

Overall, I’m giving hay, gelato., 3 out of 5 stars. Call me biased, but I already have my favourite gelato joint nearby Bedok (*cough*, FatCat, *cough*). But I’ll definitely be back to test out the waffles, because they look so good!

Till next time lovelies!
