Hello there!
Today’s review will be on KOSE Sekkisei’s White UV Emulsion, which Kiki has been using for the past month or so. Honestly, when I first heard of this product, I didn’t know what the difference between normal sunblock and an emulsion was.
So… what’s an emulsion? Well, according to Google, it’s a watered-down, lightweight facial lotion that is lighter than a cream or lotion and less concentrated than a serum.
There are two types of people in the world. You have lazy girls like Kiki and I, who barely bother with skincare products, and then you have super-on girls like my other colleagues, who go gaga over good skincare products. (Ever since I started this job, I’ve been at the receiving end of many comments – “Rose, you’re going to regret not putting skincare products on. You need skincare. You’re going to age so fast. You’re not going to remain young any longer, y’know.”)
Cue sad smile.
Which is why the team at work decided to get the job done themselves by showering us in skincare products, hence why Kiki’s been using the KOSE Sekkisei’s White UV Emulsion for the past month or so.
The premise of the emulsion is that it is a “day-use whitening emulsion with gentle oriental herbal extracts that not only protects but promotes the translucency of bare skin from the inside”. It prevents age spots and freckles and can deal with changing skin environments (such as daytime stickiness and dryness from air conditioning).
And what are Kiki’s thoughts on the product?
Kiki usually doesn’t use makeup, because she hates the feeling of product sitting uncomfortably on her skin. The emulsion, she says, doesn’t feel oily at all, which she super loves. She’s tried several other products as well, but dislikes the feeling as it can get very cakey.
Before I decided I was too lazy to put on sunblock, I actually went on a research rampage in a bid to find good sunblock. What I found out is that sunblock generally contains zinc oxide, which sits atop your skin and physically block the rays. While it’s good for protecting your skin, it’s not so good for your make-up, because the sunblock results in a chalky white base that doesn’t go away no matter how much you rub or blend.
Amazingly enough, when Kiki started using the sunblock and asked if she looked any different, I couldn’t tell at all. I’ve used another brand’s sunblock, which has honestly given me the same chalky white feel that I absolutely detest. (*Edit, I decided to use sunblock for work today and the first thing Kiki asked me was “why does your complexion look sick?” when she saw me. /shakes fist/)
So no, the emulsion doesn’t result in a chalky, white base that’s ugly despite it containing zinc oxide that will help to protect your skin. It’s Kiki approved.
Also, I noticed that sunblock… after it sits on your skin for a long time, can get oily and sticky and disgusting throughout the day. It’s the same with all makeup, to be honest. But Kiki said that the emulsion wasn’t sticky, even after a long day walking under the sun.
And then I asked her… “so what does the emulsion feel like to you?”
And she replied, “Nothing much, I just like it a lot.”
After a month of using it, I asked her if she saw any difference. And this is where I was stumped for words. The girl who doesn’t use moisturiser – whose skin is drier than the sub-Saharan desert, whose skin is still magically clear of all pimples despite her lack of care for it – said that “No, I feel no difference.”
“Does your skin seem lighter?”
“Does it? Can’t tell, leh.”
“Neither can I… T-then, does your skin feel less dry?”
“No, still feels the same to me.”
“Oh good lord.”
/Shakes fist angrily/
Expensive product is wasted on you, girl.
Her only complaint about it would be that the cap leaks when she closes it. As with all product, when you leave it drying out squished between the cap, it’ll become clumpy, which is when she has to clean and wipe it away.
Overall, is it worthy of purchase? It costs SGD$42 on the official KOSE website for 35grams, but I’ve seen it floating around on Shopee for S$30.20 (again, I have no idea where it’s a pirated product, so en guard!)
Well, there are definitely cheaper sunblocks out there in the market, but I would say that since the emulsion doesn’t result in a chalky white base and doesn’t get oily after the entire day of it sitting on your face… I would say that it’s really worth it.
Kiki’s rating of it? She gave it a solid 4 out of 5. One star was lost because it clumps.
And there you have it, folks! Our review on KOSE Sekkisei’s White UV Emulsion. Till next time, lovelies!
